Understanding Your Bill

  • If you purchase gas from another natural gas supplier that handles its own billing, please contact the company directly with your questions.
  • Understanding Gas Costs
    • National Fuel purchases the natural gas that heats your home on the open market. This means that the market forces of supply and demand determine the cost of natural gas.
    • As a regulated utility, National Fuel cannot set, or mark up, the price of natural gas.
    • Your National Fuel bill is made up of two sections: Delivery Service Charges and Gas Supply Charges.
      • The Delivery Service Charges protion of your bill is regulated by the New York State Public Service Commision. These charges include the costs to maintain the pipeline network we own and operate.
      • The Gas Supply Charges portion of your bill is the cost of the gas you purchase from National Fuel or, if you choose, from another approved natural gas supplier. National Fuel does not earn a profit on this portion of your bill. We use our purchasing power and substantial storage capacity to secure ample supplies at the best possible price.
    • Weather Normalization
      • Part of National Fuel's billing calculation in New York includes a Weather Normalization Adjustment (WNA, listed as “Weather Adjustment” on your bill).
      • The WNA reduces the wide swings in bills caused by colder- or warmer-than-normal weather. The WNA applies a credit or surcharge so that your bill reflects an amount that would be billed for natural gas delivery services under normal conditions.
    • Rate Information
      • The following rate monthly summary is neither a legal document nor an offer to form a binding agreement. It does not replace or supersede the Company's tariffs. This information has been posted as a courtesy for purposes of information and convenience.
      • Residential Sales Service (SC-1)
        • This rate class is the primary service rate used by most residential customers. The charges for this service are unbundled into two primary service charges: delivery charges and natural gas supply charges. Customers under this service can choose to receive natural gas supply service from a supplier other than National Fuel. National Fuel will continue to provide gas delivery service.

Estimated Bills

  • You can read your own meter and call us with the reading. Upon your request, we will send you a schedule that is clearly marked with the scheduled meter reading dates for your account. You then can call and report your monthly meter reading on those dates.
  • To submit a reading:
    • In the Buffalo calling area: 634-7323 (NFG-READ). In all other areas: 1-888-634-7323 (1-888-NFG-READ)
    • Submit your meter reading Online.
  • Please note: the meter reading you provide will be labeled "Estimated" on your bill.
    • If your meter was read on your scheduled date, the reading displayed will be the same as the reading you provided.
    • If it was not read on the scheduled date, your reading will be used as the basis to calculate your consumption.
